What is it about?

We summarize the literature on what situations make tics worse or better (temporarily). There are some surprises! Our personal experience can mislead us. Note "why are my tics worse in situation X?" is a very different question from "why does person Y have tics (and not person Z)?"

Why is it important?

Effective behavior therapies for tics make use of some of these transient effects on tic severity to effect meaningful improvement in urges to tic and in ticcing.

Perspectives

From a talk I gave at Tic Talk 2020, our TAA Center of Excellence virtual meeting during the height of the pandemic. The recorded talk is available from https://tics.wustl.edu/tic-talk-2020/ . Ann did a great job of turning it into written English and improving on it.
