What is it about?

This study investigated the characteristics of chars obtained from the low-temperature co-pyrolysis of a lignite coal with two biomasses in a fixed bed reactor, using thermogravimetry (TG), FTIR, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and BET. The synergetic effect of lignite-biomass co-pyrolysis on the char morphology and chemical structure are studied in detail.

Why is it important?

Low-temperature pyrolysis offers an effective way of upgrading lignite and producing chars to replace thermal or PCI (pulverized coal injection) coals in combustion or being used as a precursor to prepare carbonaceous adsorbents for use as SO2/CO2 adsorbent from flue gases. However, the physico-chemical properties of char formed from the low-temperature co-pyrolysis of lignite and biomass was rarely reported.
