What is it about?

While many VR work have focused mainly on visuals, this paper presents a VR application with voice and gesture as a primary interface to creating sonic sculptures. These sculptures embed the voices that created them and can be played back in transformed and layered forms.

Why is it important?

This VR application highlights the importance of sound in VR environments. It also playfully engages the human voice in the creation of word-based an abstract interactive sculptures which can be a therapeutic and performative tool.

Perspectives

We created this work during the 2016 US Election campaign while there was a lot of fear pervading public discussion spaces. Performing words and non-verbal reaction sounds in VR was a way to externalize the fearful external and internal monologues and dialogues. We used the work to perform and to play with others with sounds in virtual space.
