What is it about?

The global impact of COVID-19 was affected by the lack of reliable, fast, and affordable tests. As a result, the scientific community has focused on developing low-cost tests that can detect COVID-19 quickly and accurately. This study developed a new sensor, based on a material called graphene, that takes less than 5 minutes to detect the presence of the COVID virus. The sensor uses a simple, hand-held reader. During testing, it was almost 100% accurate in identifying positive and negative samples.

Why is it important?

Access to fast, accurate, and affordable diagnosis of COVID-19 infection is essential to contain the spread of viruses and prevent major outbreaks. This new biosensor could help reduce the seriousness of current and future viral infection outbreaks. KEY TAKEAWAY: A newly developed biosensor chip for rapid and accurate detection of SARS-CoV-2 addresses the limitations of widely used antibody-based tests and ensures an improved limit of detection. This could allow healthcare systems to provide better diagnosis and treatment via real-time monitoring.
